The Performing Arts Center is located in downtown Taipei in the vicinity of a large open market and consists of three distinct and different theaters and ancillary buildings. By designing a continuous ramp-like public landscape, the design offers visitors the opportunity to take on the role of the observer and the role of the observed. A theater is created between spectators and visitors. The positive and negative space of the complex creates a dramatic flow between indoor and outdoor space which is consistent with the city centre. The building’s ‘sound wave’ appearance is meant to communicate the functional aspects of the building to the urban context.
